Distributed Energy Resources Research Infrastructure

DERRI - Distributed Energy Resources Research Infrastructure - is a collaborative research project under the European FP7 programme between 15 partners from 12 countries distributed all over Europe - all partners with exeptionel and supplementary DER research infrastructures and with leading DER expertice.

In addition to internal Networking Activities and Joint Research Activities, DERRI provides external European research communities the opportunity for transnational access to the DERRI partners research infrastructures - free of charge.

The commitments by the laboratories to provide the external access is a strong incentive to keep the facilities in perfect operability, availability, security and maintenance condition, bringing an increase in the quality of the European facility fleet and the quantity of operation day availability.

The organisation in a single infrastructure of a number of facilities working in the same field bring several advantages: a better information quality and diffusion, able to reach a wider public; a single entry point for all potential user with clear and homogeneous procedures, that facilitate the access; the possibility to have experimental time allocated in the facility more respondent to the specific research needs; and the capability of the infrastructure to address the User to an alternative equivalent or better facility, in order to optimise the booking of the laboratory time.

The work performed both in the Network Activities and in the Joint Research Activities is aimed to reach similar condition in all the facilities, in term of common procedures, standards and interfaces. This will allow to carry out research programs that involve more than one facility, in a synchronic or diachronic way, and to compare and exchange results obtained by different facilities simultaneously or independently but in analogous conditions.

Different research carried out at different facilities spread over Europe, but all belonging to the same organised infrastructure gives advantages for communication and dissemination of results, crossfertilisation, and will result in the growth of a stronger European research community.

Access to research infrastructures

Scientists from EU can get assited access to the partners research infrastructure facilities ‐ free of charge.

The consortium includes research structures, owning a large number of the major facilities in the DER field in Europe. The testing and research services offered by these infrastructures can cover a large part of the needs in DER researches, mainly focusing the system and architectural aspects.

The facilities that compose the DERRI infrastructure are operating in the same research field and therefore they present several similar aspects and analogies. Far from being a problem, the apparent overlapping in the facility characteristics is, in fact, a considerable advantage.

As a matter of fact, the similarities among different facilities :
‐ Allow to verify and compare different realizations of similar conceptual schemes.
‐ Allow to respond to a greater number of access requests.
‐ Allow to guarantee a wider presence on all the European territory.

These positive features are further reinforced by the existence of a unique organized infrastructure. In fact:
‐ There is a single entry point for all the potential external users.
‐ Common interfaces are provided
‐ The experiments carried out in the laboratories belonging to DERRI will provide results that can be put in comparison on the same scale.

The above mentioned aspect are those which represent the added value of DERRI and which allow to give impulse and thrust to the European research in this field.

Even more so, considering that a great number of commercial devices are becoming available, the aspects relevant to the system and the grid architecture are those which most need research efforts and impulse.

The interest for the services and the possibilities offered by DERRI infrastructures is put in evidence by more than universities, research bodies, potential users, spread all over the Europe,  expressing your interest for the project and for the facilities and the research services offered.
